LEXINGTON, N.C. – Case goods resource FD Home has opened a warehouse here that will offer a limited amount of bedroom and dining room to dealers seeking to replenish small quantities of product quickly.
The warehouse is a leased facility operated by Shelba D. Johnson and will stock between five and eight bedroom and dining room sets initially, with room to grow over time. It began shipping in February and will primarily serve dealers in the central and eastern part of the U.S.
"It is not our full line, but we don't need it to be," said Steve York, president. "When we have product that is selling extremely well on container and we have distribution of that product, it doesn't condone us to bring it into our U.S. inventory."
York noted that the company continues to warehouse product in a climate controlled warehouse in Vietnam that is shipped in mixed containers.
"We stock our product in the factory warehouse, so as we sell product with new placements and pull items out of our domestic inventory we can immediately start building our next container to replenish inventory and keep a much smaller footprint of inventory in the U.S." he noted.
"This (domestic warehouse)," he added, "allows us to reach out to the next tier of customer."
I'm Tom Russell and have worked at Furniture/Today since August 2003. Since then, I have covered the international side of the business from a logistics and sourcing standpoint. Since then, I also have visited several furniture trade shows and manufacturing plants in Asia, which has helped me gain perspective about the industry in that part of the world. As I continue covering the import side of the business, I look forward to building on that knowledge base through conversations with industry officials and future overseas plant tours. From time to time, I will file news and other industry perspectives online and, as always, welcome your response to these Web postings.
